Stains
Post by JLC68 on May 4th, 2015, 6:47pm

Don't know if this is allowed here but if it is not please delete and accept my apology!
I have a client that wants a fireplace mantle the same color as Jack Daniels Whiskey! The mantle is no problem but having a heck of a time finding a blend of stains that make up the color he wants! Does anyone have a recipe for this color!

What type of wood are you using?

I would think something like a thinned down golden oak might be a good stating point.

It's made out of Blue Pine. I've tried golden oak and added walnut to it but it comes out too brown. This guy is really picky. The color is supposed to be a amber with golden tones to it!

Had to Google 'blue pine', never heard of it. If the images I saw match the mantle it might be tuff to get an even color.

Maybe try a more natural stain and some amber shellac?

Thanks Rob! The amber shellac is a great idea!

I use ML Campbell stains and I would take whatever sample I had and scrap pieces of the wood I was using and have my color guru at my distributor custom match the color. It might cost 75-100 dollars but I would tell the customer up front any custom match color would be an additional fee. I never had a customer decline or make a fuss about the fee and the color match was spot on every time.

Thanks Trulycustom! Problem being there isn't a place withing 150 miles of me that has that capability! I had a place to mix stains years ago but when I retired and moved to the remote corner of our state, i kind of lost a lot of my contacts!
