xx Improved 3D rendering
« Thread started on: Feb 23rd, 2010, 2:00pm »

Last night I stumbled across a method for improving the 3D rendering. Unfortunately this will only work if your video card supports mutli-sampling. It is one of those things that will either work or not work but otherwise it won’t crash the program.

Please give it a try and then let me know the results you get and what kind of video card you have. If this turns out to work on most systems I’ll probably leave it as is, otherwise I may keep looking for another solution.

To find your video card manufacturer:

XP:
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. In the control panel double click the System icon. (Switch to Classic view if the System icon is not present). Under the Hardware tab, press the Device Manager button. In the device manager window expand the Display adapter entry and right click your graphics card and then select Properties.

Vista (and Windows 7?):
The steps are virtually the same as for XP but the device manager link is in the left panel of the Control panel. And it will ask for permission to access it.

Rob, I'm by no means a computer geek so when I went to find my graphics card it dawned on me that it is about 10 years old or more, so if you don't recognize it, it's ancient. I have been a little disapointed in the graphics of CP but it is a whole lot better than nothing. My customers do like the 3D. I now figure if I update my card to something from this century my graphics would look better. I'm open to suggestions if you have a card that would work better for not a lot of $$.

Anyhow, I'm using XP and the graphics card is 'NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX (Microsoft)

The image below was generated using your temp program listed above.

Thanks for any input. Rich

From what I've read, even the cheapest aftermarket vidoe card will work for this. I still need to do some more investigating though.

I just added a new setting for the 3D. It lets you choose between using the 3d files that come with the program or the files that are included with your computer.

Selecting the system files may improve the 3d rendering along with the multisampling setting. Or, it may crash the 3d, if so just set it back to use the program files.

I found this out while switching over to a Vista machine and noticed that the 3d was better when I inadvertantly deleted these files from the program folder. Give it a try to see if it helps on your system.

Rob,

Used the system files and detail on 3D is much improved. I can see detail on crown molding that I never saw before. It worked fine on my Dell notebook computer. Will try at the office and let you know, but as far as I can tell much better. Thanks for the update and the 'stumbled' upon feature.

Rob, slightly off topic here, but would you mind expanding on how you drew the mantle? Scratching my head over this....

It is made up of a bunch of individual components. You should have the "Sample Mantle" included with the program, it will let you see which pieces are used.

I cannot see any marked difference in the quality but the controls are superfast.......almost to the point where you cannot stop where you want........

Did you switch between using system files & using the program files?

And did you increase the multisampling to at least 8?
