Blind Nailers (screw strips)
Post by timberlinemd on Jul 18th, 2013, 4:46pm

1) Break apart thickness for screw strips and stretchers into individual settings (edit) boxes.

2) Allow user to choose if screw strip (nailer) length is from side to side (the default now) or from dado to dado. This could be done with two radio boxes. Alternate method could be done the same way that the back adjustments are made now.

Purpose: To allow for bind nailers behind backs if using the inset back feature of the program.

eg. 3/4" back inset, 1/2" thick nailer behind 1/4" back, makes for a 3/4" blind nailer and a clean looking cabinet.

I use a 3/4" thick nailer behind a 1/4" back, and I do it in cabinet planner. Not sure if this is what your talking about

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Except, I see that you have run a 1/4" dado for your back and slipped the back in. I'm using a CNC to process the panels and backs. The DXF files produce a tool path that would cut away all of the material behind the back, causing a wide rabbit, not a dado. Therefore, I would need to add the dado depth amount to the nailer. I have thought of ways to use a 1/4" cutter as you have, but 1/4" melamine is either right at 1/4" or a little more, so I would need a tool path that would cut a wider dado than 1/4".

I contacted Rob off line and asked for the 'points' feature that he graciously provided. Off line I told Rob that I have spent a fair amount of time thinking about and programming issues such as these in my own 'cabinet program'. I understand some of the complexities that Rob can have with a program such as this. I believe that the 'feature' could be added without much difficulty, because I believe the logic is already there. Just add the user interface and another variable and your done. However, this is Rob's program and I posted it here because it is just a 'wish'.

If there are work-arounds for CNC I would love to hear them.

Looking at your photo, it looks like the stretchers are butt joints also. The DXF files cut a dado for stretchers and if the program doesn't add for these dados then they would need the same extension as the nailers.

I'm still previewing the program and haven't got to the way the stretcher length is produced.
